Social Justice and Development Committee JR
Committee Description
The Social Justice and Development Committee Junior focuses on addressing the most quintessential and critical issues in our current day society: the economic, social, and humanitarian development of the world that affects numerous kinds of communities. In this committee we will discuss essential topics such as human rights, immigration, inequality, poverty, education, and sustainability. Delegates will work to understand different perspectives, debate solutions and explore deep-rooted issues within society in order to promote fairness, opportunity, and protection. Throughout the course of this debate, members of this congress will have the opportunity to contribute meaningful ideas, implement changes, and have an impact towards creating a better future.
Topic A: The Hidden Cost of Poverty: Access to Healthcare, Education and Opportunity
Economic inequality is an issue that many people around the world live in. The worst part: it's not their fault. The system allows the rich to continue to become richer while the poor grow in poverty. As a result, wealth is often distributed unfairly and many resources are not used in a way that benefits those who need them most. According to Poverty and Inequality Platform (2021), “more than 826 million people live on less than $3.00 per day.” Indeed, this is a concerning situation because it shows the systematic inequalities where most people suffer unfairly. Behind this topic, delegates will discuss the situation of each country and how to reconstruct a way where greater equality becomes possible, because this issue does not disappear; instead, it increases day by day. Here is where international cooperation, discussion and joint collaboration becomes crucial to address a global challenge.
Topic B: The Paradox of Nuclear Energy: Balancing Sustainable Development with the Right to Safety
Nuclear energy is one of the few sources capable of producing large amounts of electricity without directly releasing dangerous greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide throughout the process. This more sustainable approach has contributed to nuclear energy becoming one of the largest sources of energy in the world today, especially prevalent in developed countries. However, many concerns about nuclear waste, radiation, environmental damage, and the safety of vulnerable communities nearby active sites producing this source of energy raise concerns about whether nuclear energy can be expanded while protecting people’s rights to a safe and a healthy environment. This issue will have delegates examine and consider the ethical and policy challenges, and develop solutions to determine international cooperation, strong safety regulations, responsible waste management, and protection of human rights in order to ensure that the pursuit towards sustainable development doesn’t come at the expense of public safety.
