Topics
TOPIC A: The Nuremberg trials
Right after World War II, the Nuremberg trials prosecuted leading Nazzi officials for war crimes and crimes against humanity. They pioneered international criminal law, marking the first time individuals were held accountable for mass atrocities. Yet, controversy remains: the trials were conducted under post-factum laws by the victorious Allied Powers, raising debates about "victor's justice" versus genuine, impartial legality. Should post-conflict justice prioritize legal precedent, or must moral accountability take precedence to truly deliver justice
TOPIC B: Socrates vs Athens
In BBC, the Athenian court tried and sentenced the philosopher Socrates to death for impiety and corrupting the youth. Socrates, who defended his pursuit of truth and virtue through dialogue, became an enduring symbol of intellectual freedom. This historic case forces an examination of the fundamental conflict between individual freedom of thought and the necessity of societal stability. Can a society truly claim to be democratic if it suppresses intellectual dissent in the name of preserving order?
