Committee Description
The Health & Welfare Committee focuses on the factors that shape the well-being of societies; from access to healthcare to the social and economic conditions that affect people’s quality of life. In this committee, delegates will dive in on how public health challenges, inequality, and how limited access to essential services can impact population and societies as a whole. Delegates will have to look beyond health crises while balancing national interests with the responsibility to protect and improve human well-being. At the end, delegates will create proposals that address current health concerns and improve the welfare of communities and focus on prevention strategies to reduce future health risks and build healthier, more resilient societies.
Topics
TOPIC A: Protecting Vulnerable Communities From Exploitation
Vulnerable populations, including indigenous groups, migrants, and low-income families, are exposed to exploitation and the consequent devastating repercussions, in the form of forced displacements, unfair working conditions, and human trafficking for profit. Criminal networks, and powerful actors frequently exploit communities that lack adequate resources or legal protection. This committee will investigate the leading causes of exploitation, analyze the shortcomings in international laws and regulations, and challenge delegates to develop effective solutions that will hold those responsible for exploitation accountable all over the world.
TOPIC B: Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response
For years, earthquakes have caused severe damage to communities, infrastructure and essential services, making effective preparedness and emergency response of utmost importance in order to protect lives and promote community well-being. Beyond physical destruction, earthquakes disrupt healthcare systems, limit access to medical care, increase the risk of injury, and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. Now more than ever, many factors such as climate change can increase the risks associated with natural disasters. It is important that the delegates also explore the underlying causes of these risks and identify ways to reduce their potential impact. This topic will explore how governments and international organizations can strengthen disaster preparedness, protect and prepare health care facilities, reduce the impact of natural disasters and coordinate effective emergency responses across borders.
